MO TEE SUH'S PAH-CAHN PIE

“I want some of dat der pie”
“Whudayacallit… PEE-can?”
Mo Tee Suh stared long at the stranger
“You live in New Yawk, young man?”

“I’m not from New York I’m from Pittsburgh”
“Same thing.. you ain’t from ‘round heah”
“And, what’d you call that pie, suh?”
“Whadsa madda can’t you hear??”

Mo Tee Suh ran to the kitchen
“Mama! I got a yankee!”
“Don’t know how to say pa-cahn”
“I’ll learn him! You wait and see!”

Mo Tee Suh gave the stranger his pie
“We don’t call it that, ya know”
The stranger looked up to glaring eyes
“You mean da goo on dis dough?”

“It ain’t called pee-can in the south”
“A pee can is somethin’ else!”
“Mama won’t let me tell you ‘bout that”
“Figger it out fo yoself”

The stranger grabbed his wallet
“Ain’t ya gonna finish it?”
”Nope. I’m outta here, doll face”
And, he left.. lick-ity split

Mo Tee Suh cleared the table
“Sometimes you jest can’t help folks”
“You’d think they’d like to know what’s right”
“I ain’t no pig in a poke!”

“Mama, I feel like nuthin’”
“Got no energy a-tall!”
“Mebbe, I’ll take the day off”
“And, go shoppin’ at the mall”

“You got energy to shop”
“Jest don’t feel like workin’ heah?
Mo Tee Suh’s mom let is fly
“I’m gonna make this real cleah”

“We got dishes to the ceilin”
“We got folks who wanna eat”
“You know what I wanna do?”
“Sit right down and soak my feet!”

“Mama, I been workin’ hard”
“I think I deserve some fun!”
“Git ovah to that sink, girl!”
“And, git all them dishes done!”

Mo Tee Suh’s thoughts curled her toes
As she washed all the dishes
One thing Mama couldn’t stop

MO TEE SUH FEELS BETTER

Mo Tee Suh was fightin’ mad

As she sat there on the stoop
“What’s so great about this thang?”
Staring hard at the old coupe

Then, the diner door opened
And, Charlotte Jean walked outside
“I guess there’s no sense in lyin’”
“He just asked me for a ride”

Mo Tee Suh jumped up right fast
“You be straight with me, right now!”
“I’m as straight as a pencil”
“So, don’t go havin’no cow”

“His car broke down neah my house”
“And, I jest took pity on ‘em”
“Said, he was on his way heah”
“For some ice tea ‘to the brim!’ ”

Mo Tee Suh brushed herself off
Walked back into the diner
“Would ya like some mo tee suh?
”Thar ain’t none enny finah!”

MO TEE SUH GETS NO ANSWERS

“Hey there, Mah-grit, how you doin’?”
Charlotte Jean was talking sweet
“I’m fine as frog’s hair split twice”
“So, tell me how’d you folks meet?”

Mo Tee Suh watched her feller
Walkin’ towards a booth
Charlotte Jean thought of some lies
Mo Tee Suh wanted the truth

“I saw y’all drive up out there”
“That cain’t be your car, is it?”
The feller stared at the floor
She was gonna throw a fit

“Has the cat got your tongue, girl?”
“You know I’m tawkin’ to you!”
“Why’d you drive up heah with him?
Charlotte Jean walked away too

“Fine! Fine! Just be that way then!”
“Mama, two bowls of Shoe Soup”
“That’s all those two fools will git!”
“I’ll be out thar on the stoop!”

MO TEE SUH AND THE '57 CHEVY

She sat by the front window

Hopin’ that Bubba would call
Just one little ol’ favor
Nope, he was no help at all

“Dang his hide, he’s gonna pay”
“Unless he gits heah real quick”
“I wanna know ‘bout that feller”
“Bubba’s useless as a tick”

A ’57 Chevy
Pulled into the parking lot
She gave it the once over
“I think I’m likin’ this.. not!”

Out stepped one fine Charlotte Jean
Looking like Cinderella
Then, out from the other door
Mo Tee Suh’s handsome feller

“How the hale does he know her?”
“I sho’ am smellin a rat!”
Charlotte Jean just smiled and waved
“Yep, we’ll just see about that”

MO TEE SUH'S NAME

He walked back into the diner
Hopin' she'd be there tonight
She stepped through the kitchen door
Looks like his timin' was right

“Nice tah see ya this evenin', suh”
”We got greens on the menu”
”Mama sho' picked a mess of it”
”I'd git it if I wuz you”

He smiled and watched her pour the tea
Wonderin' what she had just said
Nodding yes seemed to be the thing to do
She brought him some hot cornbread

“I don't believe I caught your name”
He asked as he sipped the tea
”That's cause I ain't served it to ya”
”Are ya tryin' tah flirt with me?”

He looked at her and scratched his ear
Not sure if he heard her right
He thought he better ask again
This might be a real long night

“It's Mahhh-grit. Daddy named me that”
”Sounds real uppity doan it?”
He then thought of Southern humor
What'd she say about my grits?

“Folks call me near ‘bout evahthang”
She left in a talking blur
He never would ask her again
He'd just call her "Mo Tee Suh"
